Junior Cadet Program
Implemented in 2010 by the Washington DC Police Foundation, who partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department and DC Public Schools to bring public safety education to 5th grade classrooms in the DC community.
Junior Cadet is a public safety program partnership between DCPF, MPD and DC Public Schools. DCPF works with five 5 public schools in the District where fifth 5th graders enroll in the Junior Cadet Program by taking a pledge to accept the position of Junior Cadet of the Metropolitan Police Department. The program reaches 140 youth and 30 adults. Youth spend one hour a week with officers, with an additional day trip each month. The programming takes place within the classroom throughout the school year, with additional field trips included. The program consists of a 31-week curriculum, with topics like: Intro to Law Enforcement, Anti-Bullying and Decision Making. Officers teach during the hour-long session, sometimes supplementing the meeting with guest speakers, such as an investigator to talk about fingerprinting. The program runs in accordance with the DC Public School calendar year.
