Tactical Village
The Washington DC Police Foundation is working to advance the creation of a realistic simulated police training village in the District of Columbia for the Metropolitan Police Department. The Tactical Village will enhance the quality of training available to thousands of officers, agents and private security employees from the Metropolitan region.
The Tactical Village, which is a state-of-the-art skills training center and a reconstruction of an urban street setting, is moving forward. The first contract was awarded in October of 2009, and expected completion will be in December of 2012.
The facility consists of a mock town containing a variety of building and streetscapes, an interactive system for force option training, and classrooms. The Tactical Village will provide a realistic environment in which to train officers, recruits and interagency teams in police scenarios and tactics specific to our Nation’s capital, including courses on threat response and infrastructure protection.
The centralized location at Blue Plains in Washington DC will allow for multi-jurisdictional use, available to the two dozen organizations that patrol and secure areas both inside the District and the surrounding region. The modern structures will have moveable walls to allow for imitation of historic buildings, tourist attractions, federal agencies and embassies, all unique and important to the National Capital Area. The flexible, durable furnishing are specially designed to stimulate a variety of settings and to withstand thousands of students tromping through the setting annually, shooting simulated fire. Laser-based interactive firearms will enhance their shooting skills and breaching doors will provide the opportunity to improve their skills at forced entry. Closed circuit cameras will be able to record training maneuvers, so that both trainers and students may observe and review the operations to improve learning.
Our nation’s capital city presents a unique complex and demanding challenge for law enforcement, security, crisis management, counterterrorism and the safeguarding of critical infrastructure. The Tactical Village will help to ensure that Washington DC’s first responders are properly trained and prepared to provide a coordinated, comprehensive response and mitigate homeland security risks to the nation’s capital.
